Robbery at Anoeta: Refereeing Condemns Barça to an Unjust Defeat

What happened at the Reale Arena was not just a simple refereeing error: it was a sporting robbery that must be denounced emphatically. FC Barcelona saw their winning streak broken and, more seriously, suffered a sequence of dubious refereeing decisions that call into question the credibility of the League’s system.

From the start, the match was overshadowed by an excessively rigorous and erratic refereeing. Barça had three goals disallowed and a penalty withdrawn after VAR review, including a goal by Lamine Yamal that was invalidated for a marginal offside position measured with criteria impossible to justify sportingly. These decisions, which should be considered marginal or debatable, ultimately tilted the result against the Blaugrana team.

As if that weren’t enough, the attitude of referee Jesús Gil Manzano was openly criticized by the players themselves. Captain Frenkie de Jong complained that they couldn’t even talk to the referee, who looked at the players with an authoritarian and superior attitude, lamenting the lack of communication and transparency in the decisions.

Moreover, the management of added time was scandalous, with notable time-wasting that was not compensated at the end of the match. This lack of adjustment deprived Barça of vital minutes to try to equalize a score that should never have reached this situation.

The facts speak clearly: three disallowed goals, a withdrawn penalty, and a refereeing attitude that was nothing short of provocative, all this added to the fact that Barça dominated the game and created chances but saw their efforts vanish due to decisions that, collectively, seem too repeated to be mere isolated errors. The federation and the League must respond because these kinds of actions not only harm a historic club like Barça but also tarnish the essence of the competition.

Above all, we respect sportsmanship and fair competition. But when refereeing decisions become the protagonists of a result, we must shout it out loud: this is not football, this is a robbery.
