FC Barcelona visit Real Betis at La Cartuja this Saturday, October 17, for the ninth round of La Liga, having made a flawless start to the season and with two important additions to the squad: Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong. The match, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., opens a demanding week for the Blaugrana, who will also face Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
Leaders with record-breaking numbers
Hansi Flick’s team arrive in Seville at the top of the table, with 24 points from a possible 24: eight wins from eight matches. They have scored 34 goals and conceded seven, figures that reflect both their attacking ability and the solidity they have shown in this opening stretch of the campaign. Their most recent win was a 3-0 victory over Getafe; before that, Barça beat Galatasaray 4-1 in Istanbul in the second round of the Champions League league phase.
The challenge is to extend the winning run against an opponent who are no pushovers. Betis are third with 19 points, having recorded six wins, one draw and one defeat. Manuel Pellegrini’s side are coming off a 5-2 league win over Osasuna and a 3-2 victory over Porto in Europe, and approach the match full of confidence.
Returns to be managed carefully
Raphinha is back after suffering discomfort in his right thigh during the international break. De Jong, meanwhile, is included in the squad for the first time this season after recovering from a right knee injury. Both are among the 23 players named, but Hansi Flick has warned that their involvement will need to be managed: the Brazilian still needs to regain his match fitness, while the Dutchman is returning after a lengthy spell out of action.
Having both players available gives the coach more options, particularly with a schedule that may require rotation. Flick has also acknowledged that Lamine Yamal’s minutes need to be managed, although the young forward’s current form makes it difficult to leave him out. The coach stressed that the priority is to prepare properly for a Betis side who have won all their home matches.
A test before two major fixtures
The match at La Cartuja will test Barça’s consistency against a dangerous attacking opponent in a strong run of form. It is also the first of three major fixtures: on Tuesday, a visit to PSG in Paris; and on Sunday the 25th, the Clásico against Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou. With the league campaign still in its early stages, picking up points in Seville would allow the Blaugrana to protect their lead and build confidence ahead of this decisive run of matches.
